Home Addition FAQs

You may be considering a home addition or room addition, but have some questions.

Below are some of the most frequently asked questions about home additions, as well as some tips to help you get started.

How much does a home addition cost?

The cost of a home addition can vary greatly depending on the size and scope of the project. A simple room addition may cost a few thousand dollars, while a whole home redesign can easily run into the six figures.

How do I know if I need a permit for my home addition?

The answer to this question depends on your local building codes. In general, however, most home additions will require some type of permit.

How long will it take to complete my home addition?

Again, this will depend on the size and scope of the project. A small room addition could be completed in a matter of weeks, while a large home redesign could take several months to complete.

How can I add a room to my home?

One of the best ways to add an extra room to your home is by finishing an existing space, such as a basement or attic. This can be a relatively simple and cost-effective way to create additional living space.

Another option for adding a room to your home is to build an extension onto your existing structure. This will require more planning and effort, but will ultimately give you more space to work with.

Whatever route you decide to take, be sure to consult with a professional contractor to get the best results.

Will I need permits to add onto my home?

This will depend on the size and scope of the project, as well as your local building codes. In general, most home additions will require some type of permit.

If you're unsure, it's always best to consult with a professional contractor to get the most accurate information.

When adding onto your home, be sure to take into consideration the following:

  • The type of addition you want to build
  • The size of the addition
  • Your budget
  • Your timeline
  • The permits required by your city or town

Will an addition add value to my home?

This is a difficult question to answer, as the value of your home will depend on a variety of factors. In general, however, most home additions will add some value to your property.

If you're considering an addition for the purpose of increasing the value of your home, it's important to consult with a real estate agent or appraiser to get an accurate estimate.

Some factors that will affect the value of your home addition include:

  • The location of your property
  • The quality of the materials used
  • The size and scope of the project
  • The overall design of the addition

What is a bump out addition?

A bump out addition is a small extension that is added onto an existing room. Bump out additions are typically used to add a bit of extra space to a room, such as a kitchen or bathroom.

Bump out additions can be a great way to add value to your home, as they provide additional living space without the need for a full-blown addition.

Can an addition be designed to blend in with my home's current architecture?

Yes, an addition can be designed to seamlessly blend in with your home's existing architecture. This is often done by matching the materials used on the exterior of the addition with those used on the original structure.

What is design-build construction?

Design-build construction is a method of building in which the contractor is responsible for both the design and construction of the project. This type of construction is often used for complex or custom projects, as it allows for a more streamlined process.

Is design-build construction better than having a separate designer and construction company?

There is no easy answer to this question, as it depends on a variety of factors. In general, design-build construction can be beneficial for complex or custom projects.

Some advantages of design-build construction include:

  • A more streamlined process
  • Increased communication between the designer and contractor
  • Greater flexibility in the design process
  • The ability to make changes more easily

The main disadvantage of design-build construction is that it can be more expensive than having separate companies for the design and construction phases.

Ultimately, the best option for you will depend on your specific needs and budget.

Home Remodeling FAQs

What is a home remodel in comparison to bathroom or kitchen remodels?

A home remodel is one that includes multiple areas within a home as opposed to just the bathroom(s) or the kitchen. It can include anything from simply updating flooring, lighting, fixtures, and other cosmetic features throughout the house to more significant improvements like re-planning spaces, moving walls, and replacing or adding storage solutions and other conveniences. Home remodels may include the bathroom(s) and/or kitchen, but they usually extend to other areas as well.

What does the home remodeling process involve?

A home remodeling project with begins with planning sessions during which homeowners can express their wants and needs for their home remodel and budget can be discussed. We will work with homeowners by guiding them through the design process until they are satisfied with the proposed design, then create a detailed estimate for the work that will be done and a schedule for completing it all. Once the remodeling plan and budget are confirmed, we will start the remodeling project, keeping homeowners up-to-date and involved as their remodel progresses.

What considerations should I make in preparation for a home remodel?

To best decide what a home remodeling project should entail, homeowners should think about the ways they use their homes currently as well as the problems and inconveniences they would like to resolve. What changes would make the home more user-friendly? What modifications would make the home more appealing and comfortable? The answer to these questions will be different for every homeowner. We are happy to help our clients identify these things during the project planning stage so their home remodeling projects have purpose and direction.

What are the best improvements to include in my home remodel?

When planning a whole home remodel to improve the entire house, the best improvements for a particular homeowner are the specific ones that will help them and their family enjoy and use their house more. Bathroom and kitchen redesigns are the most popular with many homeowners, but so are remodels that include enlarging existing rooms to make better use of floor space, adding more storage like walk-in closets, removing or moving walls to create living and work areas that are more open and user-friendly, adding decks, sunrooms, and windows, adding and improving home lighting, and even room additions to increase the square footage of smaller homes.

What home improvements add the most value to my house?

The home remodeling projects that bring the most return on a homeowner's investment include bathroom updates or remodels, kitchen remodels, new appliances, new flooring, finished basements or attics, adding another bedroom, adding a second bathroom, and updating cabinets or installing additional storage space.

What is monopoly framing?

Monopoly framing or insulated over-roof is a newer method of framing a roof that involves eliminating a rafter or rake overhang in order to have insulation laid on the roof framing that actually meets the wall sheating to create a continuous air barrier. Its advantage is that it eliminates the need for spray foam while supplying a strong and powerful assembly.

How much will remodeling my home cost?

There are many factors involved in the cost of a home remodel, so it is impossible to estimate that cost without a full understanding of what the project will entail. Generally speaking, homeowners can expect to pay less for improvements that are mostly cosmetic and do not involve moving walls or changing the layout of any rooms or the position of any utilities and pay more for more complicated projects that do include those things. Luxury appliances, fixtures, cabinets, countertops, and flooring will all increase the cost of any home remodel based on the quality and brands chosen. Good Company Construction provides detailed, transparent estimates to our clients that they can count on to be correct, so there is never a question about cost once the work begins.

How long will my home remodel take?

The length of time that is involved in home remodeling varies depending on the extent of the improvements being made. Smaller remodeling jobs can be completed in as little as a few days or a week, while extensive more complex remodels may take weeks to months to complete. As we do when quoting home remodeling costs, Good Company Construction will also provide an approximate work schedule and time estimate for completing a remodeling project so that our clients know what to expect and can plan ahead for the inconvenience of having contractors in the home.

Who will manage my home remodeling project?

From start to finish, every project that we do includes the services of a project manager who acts as a point of contact for our homeowner clients and whose job it is to keep them involved in the progress being made. Any questions that a client may have throughout the process can be easily addressed by this person. The project manager as well as our internal software that keeps all contractors and other personnel in the loop with every project being done allows us to keep all projects moving forward and all homeowners informed.

When is the best time to start a home remodel?

Home remodeling projects that involve only interior work can usually be done at any time. Work that will involve certain types of outdoor work can also be done most of the year, but it may be advisable to avoid storm season or periods when it is below freezing to prevent potential weather delays. Homeowners can plan the best time to schedule their projects during the project planning stage so that our contractors are in the home when it is most convenient for our clients and will allow them the ability to do their best work.

How should I prepare for my home remodeling project?

Depending on the scope of a client’s home renovation project, their project manager will instruct them on what should be done to prepare the house so that work can begin. We will explain which furnishings and personal items should be moved from specific rooms and anything else that should be done so work can commence. Homeowners should prepare to be without the use of their kitchen, bathroom, or whatever other space is being remodeled for a period of time while that room is completed. To best protect personal property, any valuable or fragile items should be safely stored away from the work area.

Do I need to get permits for my home remodeling project?

Most municipalities in Texas require permits to be filed prior to starting a home remodeling project of any type. Good Company Construction handles all construction permits so that our customers do not have to.

We recently completed a kitchen remodel with Good Company and it looks amazing! The owner, Daniel M. and his project manager Daniel L. were so timely and both had great communication skills. We have remodeled many homes and rooms, but this process was the easiest. The bids were clear and detailed, the subcontractors were terrific, and they even finished the project early. I am so impressed and will absolutely use Good Company Construction again in the future.

Good Company Construction was an amazing company to work with. The process started with Tyler helping create & price the scope of work and selections. Mathew was present daily on the job site to make sure all the details were taken care of. He was always professional, patient, & helpful with any concerns I had. Colton oversaw the entire project and was key in finding solutions to the inevitable challenges that always arise in renovations. We live 3 hrs. away, so communication and trust were critical. With Good Company I felt confident, and trusted in their work because they had integrity, were great at communicating, transparent with pricing & timelines, and took pride in their work. I am so thankful to have found them for the renovation of our 100 yr. old historic home. They continue to support us even though the project is complete. I am so grateful to have found such a quality construction company. Don’t hesitate to use them - you will not regret it!

I had them repair some drywall. You could not tell where the very large hole had been. They were quick to come out to give a quote, then came out the next day to fix it, and had it completely done that same day. Very pleased and will use again.

My wife and I used Good Company Construction on a MAJOR remodel of our house including a complete gutting of the kitchen, complete new flooring throughout the house, painting throughout, raising the sunken living room floor, new baseboards and trim, a new (and relocated) island in the kitchen, quartz countertops, installing new ceiling beams in the living room, and building custom cabinets in kitchen and living room. I'm sure I'm leaving some things out. I cannot speak highly enough of the quality of their work. Colton Cook, the owner of the company, and Mathew Kruse, the site supervisor, not only did an outstanding job but were also great to work with. They went the extra mile to make sure we were satisfied with the work done. I should also add that they not only did quality work, but they are quality people as well. We are VERY happy with the end product. They next time we need anything done on the house (though I do hope it's a while) we will call Good Company first. We can't recommend them highly enough.
